The Bichon Frise
The Bichon Frise is a small, sturdy powder puff of a dog which is known for its happy temperament and comical ways. They are known for their plush coats, dark eyes and nose, and wagging tail carried over their back. Bichons are very adaptable and get along with people of all ages, especially children and make good companions for the elderly. They also get along with other dogs, cats and other pets. They do like to be the center of attention in a house full of people and animals.
The word Bichon comes from the French phrase “bichon a poif frise” which means curly haired small dog. The breed is thought to be of French origin but found early success in Spain when sailors brought them home from the royal courts of Spain, Italy, and France.
The first bichons to come to the United States arrived in the 1950’s from Europe. The breed quickly grew with the establishment of the Bichon Frise Club of America which was founded in 1964. The club continues to serve as the AKC club responsible for the preservation of the breed.
Bichons usually range in size from 9 to 12 inches at the withers and should weigh from 9 to 15 pounds. They have an average life expectancy of between 13 to 14 years of age. Bichons do require regular brushing and professional grooming. Overall, the breed is healthy but should have regular veterinary visits to maintain their health.
It is truly a blessing to have a Bichon in your home and to be “Owned by them”!
